National Redbone Coonhound Association
This month starts out where last month left. After making some calls an leaving
messages. I got some returned calls. Made another call or two. I had a fellow
call me. I never did get back to him. I tried to figure out who it was but that
track got cold. Maybe he'll try again.
Heyward Sharpe Jr from SC returned my call. He hasn't been competition hunting
to much but his boy does some. He hunts some with Ricky Jayroe. He says if you
get 2 coon a night in season that's average with 5 being good. The coon are
kinda thin. He says he hits hunting hard November -March. He is a concrete
contractor an that takes the rest of the months. He said the hours can be long.
He said he started in 1976. He talked some of Alger Morgan, the Woodpecker line
an Harold Hoffmeister. He told if I get in the area look him up or even come an
go hunting.
Johnny Staats this fellow has had his 15 minutes as they say. He picks
bluegrass, mandolin. He does it on the side. He's been on CNN News as they came
to go hunting an hear his music. He's been on the Opry times, Today Show an the
New York times. He started hunting at an early age as his dad took him. 30 years
of hunting an still going strong. Now listen to this. He has 4 screws, 2 rods an
3 wire cages in his back around the L4 and L5. Old sawbones said with all that
hardware in him he was done. He said he's always been for the under dog. That
struck my memory to a line in a Gretchen Wilson song. She makes mention of being
for the under dog. He had good luck with Fireball 1 line. He has had every kind
of breeding you can image. His best dog was outta Hunter Timber Chopper. There's
plenty of coon around him. He likes a hound that don't run trash, tree coon,
hunt good an chop at the tree. He has never owned a shock collar. Keeps a
straight dog. Starts them on squirrel then turns them over. His web site is
www.johnnystaats.com.
My quest to find Mike the fellow that called me lead me to Mike Chico but he
wasn't the one. He had some trouble with his knee this summer an didn't make
National Days. He don't like to hunt in hot weather.. He has a Quad male an
female. He thinks the female is the first Quad titled female. He has talked to
some folks about that. He had a TV crew come to film a hunt with him too. You
might want to see his web site www.ccrkennel.com. Big on the Hayes breeding. He
thinks Razor red an Hoffmiester cross is a good mix.
Mike Laster said he wasn't the one that called either. He has 5 dogs with 2
being pups. 1 Dual Grand an 2 ____. I can't read my notes. He says running
season is closed west of Blue Ridge. Does some hunting with Tom Solberg an Buck
Ratliff. Has been to Wisconsin bear hunting too. He told me of a hunt they had.
There were 30 that made the draw as it was held after deer season. He said the
next one is gonna be October as they hope to go at it again. He been hunting
about 20 years. In 2001 he started raisin an competition hunting. He likes the
Razor line an T Top line.
